VIDEO - Fatal Ramifications: Texting While Driving

Avoid-texting-while-driving.jpg As a Magistrate in Duval county Traffic Court here in Jacksonville, Florida, I have a special concern about people who text while driving. I saw a P.S.A. on teen drivers who text behind the wheel, and the potential disasters of that practice. The prevalence of texting has skyrocketed, shooting from 9.8 billion messages per month in December 2005 to 110.4 billion messages per month in December 2008. Sadly, it is estimated that cell phone usage contributes to approximately 342,000 car accident injuries and causes $43 billion dollars worth of damage every year!

Recent tests have even indicated that texting while driving is worse than drunk driving! Check out this YouTube video that shows the gut-wrenching consequences of texting while driving (WARNING: this video is graphic, with realistic, but potentially disturbing, reinactments). It is stunning to see how dangerous and how devastating the effects of texting while driving can be.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, a new bill is under review that will ban texting while driving in Florida. I'm sure this will be hotly debated, since people LOVE their texts! And how do we reconcile the fact that the government and news media text traffic and/or weather information to drivers? I hope that regardless of what happens, drivers will be alert and conscientious on the roads!

VIDEO - Do The Dew: The Next Alternative Fuel?

180px-Mountain_Dew_logo_svg.png An inventor named Paul Pantone has discovered a way to use Mountain Dew to help power cars. Mr. Pantone has developed the Global Environmental Energy Technology Fuel Processor which is a system that can be retrofitted onto existing internal combustion engines and enables them to run on a mixture that’s up to 80% water. Check out the details of his apparatus in this YouTube video.

Interestingly, Mr. Pantone alleges that he worked on GEET for 25 years until he was framed for securities fraud and committed to a mental ward by seedy businessmen. Supposedly this was retaliation for Mr. Pantone’s refusal to sell his patent. Mr. Pantone goes on to contend that by using GEET, greenhouse gases and emissions from a single car can be reduced by up to 90%!

The jury’s still out regarding the efficacy of GEET as no independent verifications of Mr. Pantone’s claims have been done. Still, the fact that he was issued a patent gives him some measure of credibility. Even if the technology and Mr. Pantone’s history seem somewhat far-fetched, you have to admire his creative spirit!

This is my first blog entry that incorporates video. How did you enjoy it? Is it user-friendly enough? Does it keep your interest better? I need feedback! Please chime in.
